Following the growth of the NCAA Tournament to sixty four teams in 1985, Heathcote returned the Spartans, led by the long run MSU all-time scoring leader, Scott Skiles, to the Tournament with a fifth-place end within the Big Ten. MSU again reached the NCAA Tournament the following 12 months after finishing third within the Big Ten with a 23–8 report. Led by Skiles and Darryl Johnson, they superior to the Sweet Sixteen before shedding. In his first 12 months as head coach after eleven years as an assistant coach, Michigan State struggled after shedding All-American Shawn Respert. MSU acquired an invite to the NIT the place they defeated Washington before losing to Fresno State in the second spherical. The season marked the last time MSU wouldn't finish with a profitable record.
The Spartans defeated the previously unbeaten Indiana State Sycamores, led by future Hall of Famer Larry Bird. The 2000 National Championship group defeated the Florida Gators males's basketball team within the final.
